The Desert of Wheat Zane Grey 9781374890855 Books

This is nothing less than a work of literature. It is complete, complex and compelling. The characters struggle against their own natures, their culture, and nature itself to find answers to the question "who am I?". The themes and symbols are rich and well-supported by the narrative. This is, however, as much a book for the casual reader as it is for the more literary-minded. If you were, for some reason, expecting a clap-board western you might want to seek drier watering holes. This book is the real deal by a masterful author. I'm personally sorry I never picked up a Zane Grey book before now, and I'm not sure that I'm even comfortable throwing my poor reviewing and writing skills at this masterwork.Just read it for yourself, and keep it on your Kindle or bookshelf when you need a reminder of what a great book should be.

A good book to read in a couple days.
I was doubtful about the story at the beginning but as I continued to read I really got caught up in the plot and wondered how they would beat the labor group that was out to destroy the crops that had survived the lack of water. The romantic side light was cool too. I have seen the labor group initials in other articles so deduce it must have been a real group that did try to destroy the farmers around the time of the dust bowl. Great story and I truly did enjoy it once I got past the first few pages. My son ordered this on my account and told me to read it as he thought I would like it. IvaMay Cook
Another Zane Grey classic read! I came away with more respect, for our nation's farmers and also for what our troops suffered in this and all conflicts, defending freedom for oppressed people everywhere!
I also would like to take this opportunity to thank all the volunteers, who spend countless hours, converting all these books, for our reading pleasure.
I thoroughly enjoyed the way the author developed each of the main characters in the story and provided insights into their thoughts and the outcomes that were finally realized. The author touches on the greed of men, loyalty to their homeland, deception, cruelty and sacrifice made by fathers, mothers, sisters wives, and loved one for the man who went to war. I highly recommend this book to individuals who enjoy history, romance and the struggles and hardships faced by farmers raising wheat in the Northwest.
A novel written by the hand of a great man so eloquently done by Zane Grey. The narrative tells the age old tale of the difference between men and women and their endurance during wartime. I doubt that any other writer could have captured a tale as eloquently as Mr. Grey. The description of the wheat fields, the color, the smell, and all its glory brings us back to a time when our history began. Please enjoy this book as much as any of Mr. Grey's western writings.
ZG has penned an almost modern western about the wheat fields of the Central Plains of North America. World War I had just been declared and spies are attempting to ruin the wheat fields by starting unions that will not harvest the crops on time. This period 1920's is the beginning of the Dust Bowl era. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS
Very good, let's you know what problems we had in the early days of the IWW or the labor unions! There was so much trouble going on with the unions, that farmer's crops were burned and all their income was lost. Also the 1st world war has started and the U.S was fighting against the Germans! Kurt Dorn, whose father was German, but who had lived in the states for 50 years, thought the IWW was a good thing, until his wheat crops were destroyed, and then he realized what the IWW was all about. Kurt Dorn was determined to go and fight for his country as he said that even though he was half German, he was an American! He fought, was wounded, and returned home to once again be a wheat farmer! Recommend this book to anyone who loves a good story!
